Most sim racers start by watching the in-game HUD. It works, but it clutters your screen, and on a single monitor it competes with the track for space. A dash display (DDU) moves that information off your monitor and onto a small screen right behind your wheel, the way a real race car does. This guide covers what a DDU does, what the SIMDID DV480 Pro V5 offers, and whether you need one.
What does a sim racing dash display do?
A DDU is a small screen mounted on or behind your wheel base that shows live data from the game. Typical things it can show:
- Gear, speed and RPM, with shift lights so you change gear at the right moment
- Lap times and live delta, so you know if you're gaining or losing time through a corner
- Fuel: how much is left and how many laps it will last
- Tyre and brake data, where the game provides it
- Flags and warnings, shown through the screen and LEDs
Because the data sits in your line of sight, you can keep the HUD off and get a cleaner view of the track. On triple screens or in a cockpit, it also feels much closer to driving a real car.
SIMDID DV480 Pro V5 specs
These are the manufacturer's specifications for the V5 version:
- Screen: 5-inch, 16:9 LCD, 855×480 resolution at 60Hz
- Brightness: 350 nits
- LEDs: 16 RGB LEDs, controlled through SimHub
- Housing: 6061 aluminium alloy
- Size: 161 × 106 × 23 mm
- Connection: USB 2.0/3.0 to a PC
- Software: SimHub
- Compatible bases: Fanatec, Moza, Simagic and Simucube
Setting it up with SimHub
The DV480 Pro V5 runs on SimHub, the free PC app most sim racers already use for dashboards and telemetry. Setup is simple:
- Mount the DDU to your wheel base or cockpit and plug it into your PC by USB.
- Install SimHub on your PC.
- Choose a dashboard layout. SimHub has a large library of free dashboards, many of them copies of real race car displays, and you can edit any of them.
- Set up the 16 LEDs for shift lights, flags or other alerts.
Because it uses SimHub rather than one brand's software, you aren't locked into a single ecosystem. If you change wheel base later, the dash comes with you.
Which games does it work with?
SimHub supports most popular PC racing sims, including iRacing, Assetto Corsa Competizione, Le Mans Ultimate, Assetto Corsa EVO, Assetto Corsa and the F1 games. Check SimHub's game list for anything not listed here.
Note for console players: the DV480 Pro V5 connects to a PC and runs through SimHub, so it is a PC sim racing accessory. It isn't designed for PS5 or Xbox.
Dash display or a wheel with a built-in screen?
Fanatec recently previewed Project Obsidian, a wheel with a 5-inch colour screen, but it isn't due until 2027. Here's how the options compare:
- A separate DDU works with whatever wheel you swap onto your base, and you can buy one today. It costs far less than a premium wheel.
- A wheel with a built-in screen keeps everything in one unit, but the screen only works when that wheel is fitted, and you pay for it as part of a high-end wheel.
If you own more than one wheel, or want a dash now, a DDU is the more flexible choice.
Do you need a DDU?
Get one if you race on PC, use SimHub (or want to), want to turn off the in-game HUD, or race longer events where fuel and lap data matter.
Skip it for now if you race on console, or you're still building your basic setup. In that case, a direct drive base and load cell pedals will make you faster first. See our Top 5 load cell pedals in Singapore guide.
